Our Project
As the only hospital on the island of St. Croix, the Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center is more than a health care facility — it is a center of civic and social gathering. Hurricanes Irma and Maria critically hit the aging hospital, resulting in extensive water and wind damage that necessitated a full replacement. Collaborating with stakeholders and the community, Flad embarked on a journey to replace and reimagine the hospital. Guided by principles of resilience and flexibility, the 482,000-square-foot facility is designed to withstand extreme events like hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes and pandemics.
The design blends modern sophistication with the rich cultural importance of inclusivity, warmth and community. Intuitive wayfinding, private rooms, indoor-outdoor integration, a green roof and public courtyard enhance the patient experience. A testament to the strength of collaboration and the power of design, the facility emerges as a beacon of stability and hope.
