ASHE recognizes outstanding new health care planning, design
and construction projects with 2025 Vista Awards
CHICAGO — The American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) has announced the winners of the 2025 Vista Awards, which recognize outstanding innovation and collaboration in the health care design and construction field. The Vista Awards are presented annually by ASHE, a professional membership group of the American Hospital Association (AHA), to project teams that work together to develop and maintain exceptional health care environments while demonstrating effective communication and relying on data-based decision-making processes.
This year, ASHE congratulates the project teams behind Tower 2 at AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, in Merriam, Kan., who won the 2025 Vista Award for Renovation; and MetroHealth’s The Glick Center, in Cleveland, which earned the 2025 Vista Award for New Construction.
Tower 2 was originally constructed in 1972, making it the oldest building on the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission campus. Recognizing a need to bring the building up to a modern standard of care, AdventHealth enlisted h|d Architecture and McCarthy Building Companies to update the facility’s interior and exterior, including replacing and enlarging 220 exterior windows and resealing and coating the building envelope.
Through careful planning and thorough communication, the team successfully completed a phased approach to renovating 144 patient rooms on levels two through five, allowing the hospital to maintain patient occupancy on one half of each floor while the other half underwent construction. In addition to standardizing nursing units to improve staff inefficiencies, the team revamped critical building infrastructure systems including mechanical, electrical and heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems to meet current code requirements.
The Glick Center, opened in 2022, anchors a decade-long campus transformation for MetroHealth, a public hospital and academic medical center in Cleveland and Ohio’s sole adult and pediatric trauma and burn center. Despite the criticality of the hospital’s operations, a short timeline driven by aging infrastructure, and a firm budget financed through public bonds, MetroHealth delivered a state-of-the-art facility that modernizes care and uplifts the surrounding community.
Turner Construction Company and architect HGA deployed Lean, evidence-based and data-driven planning methods to realize MetroHealth’s ambitious vision. The resulting 386-bed, 10-story hospital follows a process-neutral design approach to allow the facility to flex as needs change over the building’s lifetime. Various aspects of the project align with MetroHealth’s commitment to community well-being, including aiding in the establishment of the Latino Construction program and interior and exterior design elements that reflect the local culture and topography.
The 2025 Vista Award winners will be recognized at the International Summit & Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction™ (PDC Summit™) March 9-12 in Atlanta. The PDC Summit™ brings together thousands of health care planning, design and construction professionals annually to learn, network and share solutions with the goal of maximizing safety, health and operational outcomes in healing environments.
This year’s PDC Summit™ sessions include keynotes by entrepreneur, author and futurist Morris Morrison, and April Hansen, personal and business growth expert and group president at Aya Healthcare, in addition to a full slate of interactive sessions and peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing forums. The conference is also a hub for technological innovation in the health care design and construction field, anchored by an exhibition featuring hands-on demonstrations from cutting-edge solutions providers.
The Vista Awards are presented by ASHE. These awards recognize significant collaboration in creating optimal health care environments. The winning teams have exemplified outstanding teamwork in all stages of their health care project, from preplanning to ribbon cutting.
