Barrier Management Video Series

Welcome to the Barrier Management Symposium Video Series, a series of videos that dive into smoke and fire barrier management, as well as other fire resistance methods. This series features top experts in the field and was developed in collaboration by ASHE, Firestop Contractors International Association (FCIA), The Joint Commission, and Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and many other partner organizations highlighted in the videos. Please begin with Module 1 below.

This segment introduces the objectives and purposes of the series – the sharing of knowledge to help improve patient safety through proper barrier management.

Module 2

Barrier Management Systems Introduction

This segment provides an overview of the development of the Barrier Management Program and the standards addressed within the series. George Mills covers the issues and concerns of barrier systems for Joint Commission standards LS.02.01.10, General Requirements, LS.02.01.20, Means of Egress, LS .02.01.30, Protections, and LS.02.01.50 Building Systems.

The Health Care Perspective on Barrier Management Part 1

Part 1 covers the strategical goals and initiatives of ASHE, importance of building codes and standards.

The Health Care Perspective on Barrier Management Part 2

Part 2 introduces the importance of building codes and standards and how they influence barrier management systems.

The Health Care Perspective on Barrier Management Part 3

Part 3 covers accreditation concerns and how these influence barrier management systems and the importance of a total system perspective in relation to patient safety.

Fire and Smoke Barriers Part 1

Part 1 identifies the different types of barriers used in healthcare facilities.

Fire and Smoke Barriers Part 2

Part 2 describes the five code aspects of rated barriers; rating, continuity, openings and penetrations, types of materials and structural robustness.

Fire and Smoke Barriers Part 3

Part 3 covers the details of smoke barriers and the importance of identifying barriers on life safety drawings.

Fire and Smoke Barriers Part 4

Part 4 Strategies for successful barrier management systems.

Fire and Smoke Systems Test Standards Part 1

Part 1 describes the background and development of the standards and methodologies for testing and the code requirements for the application of these standards.

Fire and Smoke Systems Test Standards Part 2

Part 2 describes the testing of wall assemblies and rated wall penetrations.

Fire and Smoke Systems Test Standards Part 3

Part 3 covers the importance of proper wall penetration installation and maintenance.

Gypsum Part 1

Part 1 explores the gypsum mineral and its impact on fire resistance in a systems basis.

Gypsum Part 2

Part 2 describes the different types of gypsum core and their relation to fire resistance.

Gypsum Part 3

Part 3 covers construction details for gypsum panels.

Gypsum Part 4

Part 4 shares details for repair methods and innovative gypsum technologies.

Fierstopping Systems Part 1

Part 1 covers the building and fire code requirements for firestopping.

Fierstopping Systems Part 2

Part 2 covers the variety of firestop products, firestop materials physical properties and design methodologies and selection.

Fierstopping Systems Part 3

Part 3 covers the proper installation of firestopping products.

Fierstopping Systems Part 4

Part 4 covers installer qualifications and inspection methods.

Fire and Smoke Doors Part 1

Part 1 provides an introduction to swinging fire doors and builders hardware and testing methodologies for fire door ratings.

Fire and Smoke Doors Part 2

Part 2 covers NFPA 80 and inspection requirements for swinging fire doors.

Fire and Smoke Doors Part 3

Part 3 covers installation and maintenance of swinging fire doors and inspection requirements.

Dampers Part 1

Part 1 covers the configuration and installation of fire, smoke and combination fire/smoke dampers.

Dampers Part 2

Part 2 covers the selection, installation and operational testing of dampers.

Dampers Part 3

Part 3 covers the periodic maintenance and testing of dampers.

Module 10

Glazing

This segment of the video series covers the code requirements, labeling and testing of fire protective and fire resistive glazing.

Barrier Management Program Recommendations Part 1

Part 1 covers development of a program based on policy, permit, educate and inspect processes.

Barrier Management Program Recommendations Part 2

Part 2 covers the implementation of a barrier management program along with the use of interim life safety measures and above ceiling permitting processes.

•   Once registration is completed, please check your email for the ASHE Learning Center Access Information.

Step 3:

From your ASHE Learning Center Access Information email, click the link to access ASHE Learning Center for your online test. If you do not receive the ASHE Learning Center Access Information email, contact us immediately at ashe@aha.org or 312-422-3800.

You can also access the test from your learning center once registration/step 2 is completed.
•   You will have 90 days to complete the test from the time you log in.
•   You can revisit and reprint the certificate as many times as you would like by visiting your learning center.
