Failure to Label Electrical Panel or Utilities

The condition of the physical plant and the overall hospital environment must be developed and maintained in such a manner that the safety and well-being of patients are assured. Accurate utility system control labeling helps hospitals safely shut down or isolate systems during emergencies or for making repairs. Joint Commission findings in this area are often related to a failure to properly label electrical systems and the areas that they serve.  Inaccurate or unlabeled utilities can cause confusion during construction and renovations. In times of emergencies, inaccurate or unlabeled utilities pose a significant risk to patients, staff and visitors. Hospitals should clearly label utility system controls and link them to shutdown instructions.
